Tonkawa

Many years ago, the area around Jacob’s Well was inhabited by the Tonkawa Indians. They lived along rivers and streams. For their shelters, they built teepees and wickiups.

The Tonkawas ate deer and buffalo which were plentiful. They also ate turkey, squirrels, rats, skunks, rattlesnakes, and turtles. They gathered fish, crayfish, snails, and clams from the river.

They also ate nuts, berries, roots, leaves, and herbsl.

The wickiup frame was made from bent branches

The frame was then covered with animal skins and leafy branches.

Many thanks to Kim for the wickiup drawings above.
